Since the publication of Blok's critical temperature hypothesis, much of the test data produced from research into scuffing of gears and discs has given support to the concept, whilst more fundamental work has extended the physics of lubricant breakdown. This paper outlines the development of a simple technique for direct measurement of critical temperatures and shows that the results may be used to predict scuffing loads.
