Abstract
This review paper considers the various measures of surface roughness such as mean slope, mean curvature, bearing area curve, and the density of peaks which are needed to supplement the usual c.l.a. roughness value. The problems of using a stylus instrument are discussed, and different electronic systems for processing the output signal are outlined. The emphasis throughout is not on surface measurement as such, but on surface measurement in tribology.
