Abstract
The paper deals with the established methods of heating and ventilating which are used in commercial buildings. It discusses the changes in building design and use which limit the extent to which heating and ventilation alone can be employed if comfort conditions are to be maintained throughout the year. Modern building design makes it practically essential to provide air conditioning. Whichever method of heating, ventilating, or air conditioning is used, it must be decided upon as early as possible so that sufficient cost can be allowed and the building can be designed to keep capital and operating costs to a minimum.
