Abstract
The paper reports the results of high sensitivity tensile creep tests on a 0·19 per cent carbon steel at 450°C, which is the same material that has been used for thick-walled cylinder creep tests. Very consistent results were obtained from longitudinal specimens cut from one section of the bar, but greater variability was observed with specimens cut from a second section of the bar. A few tests on transverse specimens indicate that the transverse creep properties are not vastly different from those in the longitudinal direction except perhaps in regard to the initial plastic flow.
This paper forms one of four devoted to research into the creep of thick-walled cylinders.
