Abstract
This paper is concerned with the experimental development of a linear bearing to take the launch uploads in the aircraft-launching steam catapult. The bearing employs a form of Michell tilting pad running on a continuous bearing strip and operates satisfactorily at bearing pressures of the order of 1250 lb/in2. Oil is supplied to the pads by a friction-wheel-driven gear pump. Pad life in service is limited by the starting conditions at commencement of launch.
