Abstract
The general aims in planning university courses are first considered in relation to the known needs of mechanical engineers. Thereafter, the recruitment of students is discussed at some length with special emphasis on the possibilities of obtaining more candidates. Pre-entry requirements, both academic and practical, are dealt with and this is followed by a look at the general structure of courses. A typical three-year course is next described in some detail, variants in different universities being mentioned. Finally some ideas on the possible future lines of development are given, the conclusion being that the scientific content must be counterbalanced by a correct proportion of design and production courses.
