Abstract
This paper refers to the wide range of commodities now carried by the railways and deals in particular with those handling problems which require consideration. The development of bulk handling in trains of largest size and operating between fixed points has permitted considerable advance in modern handling techniques, particularly in loading and unloading of the materials carried. Bulk transport of cars and car bodies is also extending rapidly.
The alternative methods of handling containers and the problems facing the railways in catering for home transport and yet being compatible with other forms of transport are referred to. European and world practices in the field of ‘containerization’ are included, and the paper is illustrated with a number of photographs and drawings.
