In this paper, the engineer is introduced to the problem of noise, its measurement, and its control in hydraulic systems. The causes of noise are outlined, and an examination is made of the design of circuits, including consideration of the suction and delivery lines, valves and components, pumps and motors and the development of acoustic filters. The development of a pump designed for quiet running is described.
