This paper briefly describes preliminary work in the investigation of the flow in a rectangular cavity formed in one wall of a square channel. The results of visual studies, carried out on a water tunnel and showing the flow pattern for various depths of a cavity of fixed chord, are described. Also wind tunnel data on pressure loss and noise generation are discussed.
The flow patterns found in an annular cavity are also described.
