Abstract
The author stresses and explains the need for the thought and care which must be given in the planning of departments of mechanical engineering in Colleges of Advanced Technology and universities. The need to use space and facilities as economically as possible is considered and the purposes of different forms of instruction are discussed. The provision of research and undergraduate facilities is mentioned and the need to provide rooms other than those designed for purely academic purposes is considered.
