Abstract
A short account, not intended for specialists, is presented of the constitution and general properties of refractory castable mixes. The basic factors affecting the performance of castable refractories are discussed and modern trends in the compounding of the mixes, and in the manufacture of the cement bond, are outlined. Attention is drawn to certain types of refractory castable mix which, it has been claimed, are specially suitable for specific duties or which have been used for new applications. After a survey of established usage, the emerging lines of future development are identified. The increasing construction of major refractory units entirely with castable mixes has necessitated some discussion of the methods of engineering design which are applicable to castable refractories, and emphasizes the need for more research in this field.
