Abstract
The authors describe the Roofmaster system of powered roof supports for long wall coal faces. They deal with the application of automatic operation to these supports required by the increased speed of coal-winning machines.
The desirability of fire-resistant fluids for mining operations is discussed and three types of water-containing fluids are described. Pump life is the chief factor to be taken into consideration when specifying a system for use with fire-resistant fluids and the authors discuss tests carried out with various fluids and pumps.
