Abstract
The fitment of thermostats to water-cooled engines indicates the need for temperature control, but a thermostat is limited in maintaining adequate temperatures in diesel engine vehicles under many operating conditions.
Inadequate temperatures result in high wear rates and other disadvantages of cool running are also discussed. Equipment designed to improve temperature control is described in Appendix II and graphs of engine temperatures are shown in the paper for road tanker operation.
The effectiveness and limitations of fan control and automatic radiator shutters are discussed and known advantages of improved engine wear, reduced fuel consumption and better cab heater performance are illustrated from service experience.
