Abstract
The reasons for making objective analyses of the noise in vehicles, how such analyses are carried out, and their subjective interpretation are discussed.
Results of the objective comparison, by octave-band analysis, of the “noisiness” of three vehicles are given and critically discussed with reference to the subjective “noisiness” of the three cars. Wind noise in two cars is also briefly referred to.
It is suggested that detailed objective octave-band analyses of the type outlined, carried out over a speed range are capable of correct subjective interpretation and define adequately, and permanently, the “noisiness” of a vehicle.
