Abstract
The paper deals with light aeroplane engine development over the last twenty-five years. During the whole of this period, the author has been responsibly engaged in design and development in this field and, naturally, the paper concentrates largely on designs within his direct experience, representative of the best light aeroplane engine practice.
The author feels that no apology is needed for devoting a considerable proportion of the paper to the crankshaft, since progress in its design over a long period is sometimes a remarkably accurate indication of progress in general.
