This paper deals in the main with those aspects of design which affect thermal and volumetric efficiency, and the requirements of satisfactory cooling; its contentions are illustrated by criticism of the accepted forms of cylinder head. Brief reference is then made to some of the problems which are encountered in the use of high compression ratios.
