Abstract
An oil cushion that has been reported earlier by the author (1−2)†is further investigated to establish its optimum performance characteristics. In particular, the effects of clearance between the piston and cylinder, the oil escape area and different types of input force on the dynamic behaviour of the oil cushion are studied. A singularity that occurred in a previous study (2) has now been successfully eliminated. A simple but accurate numerical solution to the second-order nonlinear equation of motion is also presented.
