An investigation has been made to improve the course-keeping capabilities of an unstable ship by adding a subsidiary automatic control to the manual steering. For this, use has been made of results of full-scale experiments with a 200 000 d.w.t. tanker and a simulation study. Some instructive results have been obtained.
