A short discussion of the ship's transfer function is given, based on the second-order differential equation. The influence of the steering gear is pointed out. Based on Bode diagram representation, the principal requirements to the controller transfer function are deducted in conjunction with a short discussion of the total closed-loop block diagram. The target for control and a possible optimization criterion is suggested.
