Several model tests are outlined for evaluating the manoeuvrability and directional stability of full and large ships. The tests are classified into three groups according to the amount of helm involved. The modified zigzag test and the reversed spiral test using the oscillation method are described in detail. Problems of correlating model and full-scale behaviour are discussed.
