An analysis is given for the flow in the clearance space between a shaft and its bearing, when the shaft is touching the bearing at its lowest point. Solutions are given for short and long bearings.
The predictions of the analysis are compared with published experimental results. While the supply pressure required to lift a shaft off its bearing may be predicted accurately, the estimated flow rate is far less than that measured in experiments.
