When air passes over a wide flexible membrane tensioned in the direction of the air stream, waves on the membrane may be excited. An expression is found for the length of the most unstable wave in terms of the air velocity and density and of the tension and density of the membrane. A numerical example of these effects in a paper-making machine is given.
