This paper describes a simple method of synthesizing linear lumped-parameter vibrating systems so that one mode (usually that with the highest or lowest natural frequency) has a prescribed natural frequency and mode shape. This synthetic method may be regarded as an inversion of the classical Holzer analytic technique. Its use is illustrated by means of two examples.
