An index number is proposed as a means of describing the torque-speed characteristic of a variable-ratio unit. This index number is combined with conventional relations describing a differential gear in order to deduce the limiting power-speed envelopes of a differential transmission.
Input-coupled and output-coupled differential transmission systems are examined and shown to have markedly different characteristics; for this reason they cannot be considered inversions. It is evident that the general relations describing each type of transmission can be used to synthesize a transmission or to analyse an existing transmission.
