Abstract
General equations are given for the stresses in a thin shell subjected to temperature variation, when the shell is supported by a smooth, rigid container. A class of isothermal exact solutions is briefly considered, but the main part of the paper is concerned with the ellipsoidal shell, for which a solution is obtained in the form of an infinite double series. For calculational purposes the series can be truncated after a few terms, provided the eccentricity of the ellipse is not too great.
