Abstract
Research into existing work on gyroscopic action in the lateral vibration of radially symmetric shaft systems shows room for further work on practical methods of predicting natural whirl frequencies and shapes. The author of this paper seeks to explore the extent to which principal co-ordinate analysis is applicable. Within the limits of this applicability, approximation formulae and iterative processes are developed for the prediction of all critical lateral vibration or whirling conditions.
