The response of a single-degree-of-freedom non-linear system of the Duffing type to two forms of pulse excitation is examined by the Poincaré-Lighfhill perturbation method. The analytical results obtained are compared with numerical solutions calculated on a digital computer. The significance of the results in stability problems in certain multi-degree-of-freedom non-linear systems is discussed.
