Abstract
The stresses induced by the firing pressure and the spring force have been determined by the frozen-stress photoelastic technique for two shapes of valve. The results are compared with stresses calculated for flat circular plates of varying thickness. Because the calculated stresses were greater than the measured stresses, this simple method of calculation is described. Curves are presented to assist in rapid calculation of these stresses for any shape of valve.
