A method of determining the stress distribution in rotating axially symmetrical systems is presented. The analysis is based on the three-dimensional equilibrium equations and is applicable to turbine wheels of appreciable thickness for which the thin disc (plane-stress) theory gives only approximate results. A convergent numerical solution using two stress functions has been obtained on a digital computer by ‘relaxing’ two governing equations.
