Abstract
In the paper the authors discuss a unified treatment of thermal stresses arising in spiral fin geometries ranging from straight axial fins to annular disc fins. Temperature is assumed to vary with radius only; and if necessary a variation of fin thickness with radius can be accommodated. Specimen calculations suggest that, for a given fin height and overall temperature difference, induced stresses are much lower for a spiral fin of helix angle about 30 to 60° than for either an axial or discord fin. A byproduct of the analysis is a method of estimating the inertia stresses arising in certain types of helical rotor.
