This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the torsional oscillations which are induced in the shafting of a simple Hooke's joint system by the periodic variations of the velocity ratio of the joint. The governing equation of the system is linearized and Floquet's theory is then used to investigate the existence of critical speed ranges within which the solutions of the linearized governing equation become unstable and so indicate the incidence of violent oscillations.
