Abstract
A step mat has been designed and manufactured for measuring the gait pattern of patients. It is a portable, low profile mat which does not require any attachments to the patient. Information such as stride length and walking velocity during each stride are displayed on a computer VDU and this information may be automatically stored on a computer file for comparison with previous or subsequent performance of the patient. Preliminary trials at the Withers Orthopaedic Unit at Musgrave Park Hospital have shown that the system gives quick, accurate, and reliable results.
