Abstract
The tibial component of the Geomedic® knee joint is subject to a non-uniform stress distribution which tends to cause loosening from the substrate. An experimental stress analysis was carried out to establish the nonuniform stress distribution by embedding three dimensional strain rosettes into epoxy plugs and fitting them into a large epoxy model of the tibial component. The strain data caused by loading the model of the tibial component in compression was analysed and was compared with results from a finite element analysis on a similar model of the prosthesis.
