Abstract
The study undertaken investigated the nature of the forces exerted on gymnasts due to thigh contact with the low bar during hip beat exercises on the asymmetric bars.
High speed cine photography and accelerometry techniques were used to obtain the experimental data. The data from the films were analysed using a D-MAC motion analyser and computer programs. A measure of the deflection and acceleration of the low bar due to impact was obtained. A direct measure of acceleration was obtained using two accelerometer transducers attached to the low bar. The method of determining the forces from the values of acceleration is outlined and the results are presented.
The implications of the findings of the study for coaches and researchers are considered and recommendations for further similar study are proffered.
