Abstract
A miniature swashplate pump is described with a unique performance, as far as the authors are aware, delivering 1.5 ml/s of water at a pressure of 34 bar; the complete motor, gearbox and pump assembly weighing 315 gm and measuring 42 mm diameter by 108 mm long. An efficiency, electrical to fluid, of 61 per cent has been achieved under normal operating conditions, the pump mechanical efficiency being 78 per cent.
A synopsis of the pump development is included with details of the current design. Although this pump has been designed specifically for use in a hydraulically powered artificial arm system, with suitable modification it could be used in any application requiring a high pressure, low flow rate fluid delivery.
