Abstract
This study analyses the influence of the non-Newtonian behaviour on the elastohydrodynamic characteristics of lip seals. The thickness variation, the power loss by friction, and the leakage of pumping are analysed, utilizing the Gecim law. More precisely, it is observed that a small viscosity reduction in the sealed zone can lead to a significant dissipation decrease and consequently to a moderate rise in the torque rubbing of the lip, contributing to the increase of its lifespan.
