The most worrisome failure for coated surfaces in tribological contacts is premature coating detachment (adhesive failure). This article presents, by way of case studies, attempts to understand such failures encountered in tribological testing of coated components. Numerical modelling has been used to help understand what stresses at the coating-substrate interface are most detrimental to long interface lifetimes.
