Abstract
Verification and validation (V&V) is not new to engineering projects although it has become much more formalized in recent years. In particuar, Network Rail with Parsons Brinckerhoff Ltd have applied a formal, highly structured verification and validation process to the West Coast (WC) Programme. The adoption of formal V&V processes on the comples WC programme was a significant challenge and some of the initial procedures required modification before the eventual, very effective process was implemented. The paper will elaborate on the WC process, the problems encountered, the human issues, and the successes. The formal process has presented the client with cost savings, recuced risk, and positive confirmation of compliance with the many and exacting programme requirements.
