Abstract
Abstract
This paper explains and compares four different technologies used for piped pneumatic transportation of bulk materials within the aluminium smelter at Holyhead, North Wales, and gives guidance for the selection of future systems. The differences in system design and operation are surveyed, the relative advantages and disadvantages identified in practical operation are discussed, and the energy consumptions of the different systems are compared. In addition, comparisons are made to the alternatives, i.e. mechanical conveying systems. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to what lessons may be learned in regard to choosing, operating and maintaining a system for the conveying of abrasive materials.
