Blending dimethyl ether (DME) in diesel oil as fuels for compression ignition engines might cause compatibility problems between rubber seal parts and the fuel in the fuel system. To solve this problem, in this study, several rubbers normally employed for different sealing circumstances have been chosen in order to test their resistance to 20wt% DME blended in diesel (D20). The testing procedures were conducted according to the related ASTM standards so that a general conclusion can be made. Experimental results show that, in comparision with other tested materials, nitrile—butadiene rubber exhibited a lower swelling rate and acceptable changes in its physical properties after immersion for 30 days, indicating that it may be used for the modified engine fuel system with resistance to D20 fuel.
