Abstract
This paper presents a strategy for investigating life cycle performance of a product by means of analysing the cumulative energy expenditure (CEE). The strategy involves the use of energy life cycle data on materials, processes, machine elements, subassemblies and assemblies. These are used in a modular approach to put together a concept with the minimum requirement for detailed data. The individual modules need to be categorized according to variables that can be estimated with sufficient confidence early on during the design.
