Abstract
This paper investigates a laser Doppler based non-contact in-process diameter measuring system, which is used to measure the diameter of rotating workpieces while they are located in a CNC (computer numerical control) turning machine. A wide range of experiments were carried out to evaluate the system. Various workpiece diameters, surface finishes, surface velocities and focusing ranges were used to investigate the accuracy and repeatability of the technique, and possible effective parameters were studied. Error sources were found and solutions were proposed to improve the technique.
