This Note describes the development of new approximate formula for torsional rigidity of beams with simply connected cross-sections. The formulae are not dependent on a ‘thin-section’ assumption and can be applied to cross-sections with many ‘corners’ and many ‘ends’. The formulae give values for torsional rigidity with accuracies which compare well with those achieved using a sophisticated finite element analysis.
