Abstract
One important decision is involved in the variable-stiffness approach to the solution of elastic-plastic problems by the finite-element method - namely the size of the load-increments that should be employed. This paper presents a very simple method of estimating ‘load-increment ratios’ which can be used to determine the size of these increments. If, however, a pre-determined constant load-increment size is employed, the load-increment ratios can be used to proportion appropriately the elastic and plastic stiffnesses of transition finite elements which go from the elastic to the plastic state during the load-increment.
