Abstract
The report describes a fluid-loading type of platen which can apply uniform sustained stresses of more than 15 N/mm2 (2200 1b/in2) to rectangular specimens. Four such platens were used in a square configuration to apply uniform biaxial compressive and tensile stresses to a 150 × 150 × 19 mm (6 × 6 × 3/4 in) specimen. Two fluid platens in combination with two rams were used to apply uniform biaxial compressive and tensile stresses to a 150 × 273 × 19 mm (6 × 10 3/4 × 3/4 in) specimen. Tests showed that the fluid platens had negligible transverse stiffness and did not, therefore, restrain the specimen or absorb transverse loads.
