Abstract
An axi-symmetric method, which is easy to apply and is quick in yielding an answer, is presented for the analysis of thermal stresses in pistons. The designer who wishes to use the method will find the relevant formulae collected together in Appendix 2.
The theory has been applied to four different pistons and it reproduced the general measured stress levels above the gudgeon-pin bosses, although the predicted stresses were in some cases up to 30 per cent lower than the maximum measured values. It is concluded that the method gives a useful description of the thermal stresses in this critical region.
