Necessary conditions for reliable direct loading and frozen-stress tests are stated. Efficiency of operation of transmission polariscopes is discussed and instruments which incorporate desirable features are described. The types of measurement which may be required are analysed and the necessary procedures for stress determinations and calibrations are discussed.
