Thermal strains in the axial direction of an aluminium alloy tapered plate specimen were measured under steady state conditions by means of wire resistance strain gauges. The active gauges were temperature compensated by fixing dummy gauges to small aluminium slips and placing them in the same environment as the active gauges. This technique is discussed in the text. In general it was found that the results substantiate a theoretical analysis.
