Abstract
An analysis is given of the elastic behaviour of an annular borehole plug dynamometer for measuring changes in the stress condition of rock about mine workings, consisting of a hollow steel cylinder fitted into a hole drilled in the rock. Increments of rock stress are deduced from the readings of strain gauges placed circum-ferentially about the inner radius. The sensitivity is calculated for the instrument for two cases: when it is cemented into the hole and when it is a sliding fit. The latter case is taken as the possible extreme result of a breakdown in the cementation.
