Abstract
This paper is concerned with the stress state induced by a radial force applied to a circular shaft, shrink fitted into a plate. Conditions for the avoidance of separation and slip are considered, together with the overall strength of the contact. The problem is considered as a complete or receding contact, and solutions are developed by two independent routes, which bracket the perfectly lubricated and adhesive bounds to the problem, and which provide a versatile design route.
